Start with a standing cable chest press
The manual's chest press example places a handle at shoulder height on each side and uses the same selected load for both arms. A staggered stance helps establish a steady position. Keep the trunk still as you press and control the return.
Adjust the outlets and attach handles before taking tension. Confirm with gym staff how the carriage locks on your version; the appearance of an adjustment handle alone does not show that it is secured.
- With the stacks resting, set both cable outlets to the height shown for the exercise and confirm they are locked.
- Attach the recommended handles and check that each connector is closed.
- Select a light, equal load on each side for this bilateral press.
- Take a staggered stance with slightly bent knees and the cables under tension.
- Press both handles forward without moving your trunk. Return under control and settle the stacks before adjusting anything.
Choose an exercise name before logging
Use 'standing cable chest press', not simply 'cable machine'. A row, press and curl on the same station are separate exercises. The manual also gives high-row and low-row examples, but they use different outlet positions and should have separate workout records.
Record the attachment, outlet height and selected weight per side. A note such as 'two handles, shoulder-height outlets, displayed 5 kg each side' makes the convention clear. If you prefer logging a combined total, write that convention down and use it consistently.
Do not assume the stack number equals the resistance at the handle on every station. Pulley arrangements differ. Keep comparisons on the same equipment where possible, and add the machine name when you train somewhere new. Save the setup that worked rather than trying to remember the carriage position next week.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 'cable machine' as the exercise name for several unrelated movements.
- Changing pulley height while the cable is loaded.
- Recording a per-side weight one week and the combined total the next.
